In this symposium, we will examine research related to the Biofield and Energy Healing, with a focus on detecting and measuring energies at the body surface and radiating from the body. What can these energies tell us about the holistic health condition of the human body? Biofield devices will be explored in depth, as well as instruments to detect changes in the healing environment. As a frontier science, the biofield and energy healing may lead us to new medical diagnostics and therapeutics.
Please join us in this highly interactive event and plan to attend with your microphone and camera so that you may engage with the speakers and fellow attendees. SSE members are offered extended Q&A options, and all attendees will have opportunities to network and converse in the virtual social lounge.

Since 1982, the Society for Scientific Exploration (SSE), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has provided a professional forum for presentations, criticism, and debate concerning topics, which for various reasons, are ignored or studied inadequately within mainstream science. The SSE also promotes improved understanding of those factors that unnecessarily limit the scope of scientific inquiry, such as sociological constraints, restrictive world views, hidden theoretical assumptions, and the temptation to convert prevailing theory into prevailing dogma.
Dr. Beverly Rubik earned her Ph.D. in biophysics at the University of California at Berkeley. Since then, she has published over 90 scientific papers and 2 books. From 1992-1994, she served as one of 18 advisors selected by Congress to the Office of Alternative Medicine, the precursor of the National Center for Integrative and Complementary Health at the National Institutes of Health. In 1997 Dr. Rubik founded and became president of the Institute for Frontier Science, a 501c3 nonprofit laboratory in Emeryville, California. She is a leading scientist internationally known for her research that goes beyond the mainstream and challenges the dominant biomedical paradigm.
Professor Melinda H. Connor is the Director of Research for Akamai University and a Professor of Complimentary Medicine, chair of the board of directors of the National Alliance of Energy Practitioners and founder of Earthsongs Holistic Consulting. Trained at Harvard University, Wellesley College, University of San Francisco, American Military University, and California Coast University, Dr. Connor did her NIH T-32 research fellowship at University of Arizona Program in Integrative Medicine. Board certified and a Fellow of the American Alternative Medicine Association, she is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Medicine, UK and the author of ten books.
Federico E. Miraglia is a Particle Physicist, Ph.D. Biofield Scientist, Doctor of Natural Medicine and Parapsychology Researcher. His biofield research activities involve the study of non-invasive devices that measure and assess human bioenergetics and psychophysical well-being, bridging Eastern and Western medical systems. Federico’s mission is to advance integrative medicine and holistic science, through research, application and divulgation, bringing forth a message of health, innovation and awareness.
Margaret Moga Ph.D. is an associate professor of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Physiology at Indiana University School of Medicine. Her research background is the neuroanatomy of circadian rhythms and the central autonomic nervous system. Her research interests include developing scientific measures of ‘energy healing’, the chakras and other bioenergetic phenomena such as kundalini, and studying the exceptional experiences of healers and meditators. As a complement to her research, she has completed training as a practitioner in Healing Touch biofield therapy.
W.J. Ross Dunseath, Ph.D., is an electrical engineer who first encountered the wild world of psi research as a student at Duke University in the previous century. After working on dry electrode biosensors in a biofeedback lab at Duke, and inventing instrumentation for combined EEG/fMRI neuroimaging in a startup venture, he joined the Westfall Neuroimaging Lab at the Division of Perceptual Studies, University of Virginia, and is also research coordinator at The Monroe Institute. Present interests include neuroimaging of altered states of consciousness and psi phenomena, psi sensors, and biofield measurement.

Studies have noted electric field surges and magnetic field (MF) oscillations in close proximity to the healers’ body, suggesting that electromagnetic field variations may be part of the energy healing mechanism. In a study of Healing Touch practitioners, environmental magnetic field activity significantly increased during the healing sessions, but not during experiments with progressive relaxation or mock healing. A unique magnetic field waveform was observed, which has been reported by other investigators with different magnetometers. The ‘charge-discharge’ nature of energy healing is evident in the magnetic field recordings, and is characteristic of Reichian orgone and human physiology, in general. A dual-level mechanism may account for both local effects and distant, non-local effects of healing.

This research is aimed at studying the functioning and reliability of the Apparatus for Meridian Identification (AMI), an electrodermal device that measures the acupoint response. 100 participants were repeatedly tested to evaluate whether the AMI could provide a reliable and informative assessment about their bioenergetics, in accordance with Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. The AMI resulted to be an accurate device, whose potentialities in biofield science should be further explored.

The ultraweak light known as “biophotons” emitted from organisms may convey information central to life. To explore this, we designed and built a custom photon counting detector system with a walk-in dark closet that can sit 3 persons comfortably. This system uses a conventional photomultiplier tube with customized electronics to count photons emitted from various regions of the human body or other organisms. We studied single subjects and also subjects engaged in energy healing inside the dark chamber. Our experiments show that certain regions of the human body, including the palm of the hand, forehead, heart, and abdominal regions, emit photons in the visible spectrum at an extremely low rate (less than 100 counts per min), in line with published values. We measured the light emitted from mind-body practitioners of qigong, meditation, yoga, and various types of energy healing, such as Reiki, and external qi, among other forms. In some cases, these practitioners were able to alter their own energy emission dramatically, for example by “opening” and “closing” the “third eye” region. We demonstrated scientific validation of certain concepts of ancient Oriental knowledge, such as sword fingers being one of the greatest emitters of energy from the body. In addition to discussing some experiments conducted within our custom-built biophotonic chamber, Dr. Rubik will discuss the Bio-Well device, a digital form of high voltage electrophotography from Russia, which measures the induced light emitted from the fingertips and reveals information about health and healing states.

In an effort to replicate the Copper Wall Research led by Elmer Green at the Menninger Institute, a similar facility was constructed at The Monroe Institute 2018 and a pilot study was conducted in 2019 - 2020. Single-channel electrostatic measurements were made on staff and program participants at the Monroe Insititute. Measurements with two healers were conducted as well. The study was exploratory, with a focus on identifying and controlling for environmental sources of measurement artifact. Results and plans for a study combining electrostatic measures with other sensors will be presented.
